#GiveUpYourGun Gun Pile

A Growing Threat

The Metropolitan Police have launched a #GiveUpYourGun campaign in an effort to tackle gun crime. For one week, people living in Enfield and Haringey can hand over their firearms without having to give personal details to the police.

The campaign comes after recent figures show that gun crime is up 15 percent in Haringey and that Enfield has the eleventh highest gun crime rate in London.

But gun crime has been a growing concern for years. In May 2016, for example, armed police patrolled six boroughs – including Hackney, Lambeth and Southwark – in a bid to curtail shootings. And such extreme measures are justified by the official figures, which show that gun crime increased by 10 percent in 2016 alone.

How Trained Security Guards Can Help

Having trained security staff on site is one of the most effective crime prevention solutions available to businesses. Here’s why:

  1. Security Guards Act as an Effective Visual Deterrent

Criminals are far less likely to target businesses which have a visible security presence. Though CCTV will deter some criminals, having uniformed guards on site will make every criminal think twice about targeting your business.

  1. Security Officers Provide an Appropriate First Response

With crime victims waiting up to 50 percent longer for 999 calls to be answered, security staff are increasingly relied upon to provide an effective first response. Trained to take charge in an emergency, help people stay safe and detain suspects, security officers can prevent crises escalating and minimise additional harm.

  1. Security Staff Can Be First Aid Trained

Time can be critical if someone is seriously injured, and often every passing minute is vital. Having first-aid trained security guards on hand could mean the difference between a person losing their life or not.

  1. Monitoring and CCTV

Security guards are trained to spot and respond to suspicious behaviour. When a security officer spots somebody acting strangely, they can step in and make sure that nothing is amiss. Security staff can use CCTV to extend such comprehensive monitoring to your entire premises.

  1. Access Control

By checking credentials, checking for contraband and restricting access to sensitive areas, security guards will ensure that no one can enter an area they aren’t supposed to.
