Exterior Security Lighting

Sixty percent of commercial burglaries take place in the evening or at night. This is because thieves know that they are far less likely to be spotted or identified in the dark. As such, one of the most effective corporate security measures businesses can put in place is exterior security lighting.

There are several different types of exterior security lighting systems available. Your business’s location, the level of threat and your budget will determine which type of system will suit you best.

Motion-Activated Exterior Security Lights

Installing security lighting will increase your electricity bill. As such, you may want to consider motion-activated exterior security lights. Unlike other solutions, motion-activated security lights only turn on when they detect movement. Because they won’t be left on all night, your electricity bill should’t break the bank and your premises will remain secure.

Solar Flood Lights

Another environmentally-friendly and cost-effective option is solar flood lighting. Because solar flood lighting takes its energy directly from the sun, your electricity bill will remain pretty much the same. Today, solar flood lighting is incredibly effective. The best LED lighting will provide a high-quality of light, giving the ability to recognise faces at around 30′.  Solar flood lights will even operate if your power goes out.

Halogen Flood Lights

Like incandescent light bulbs, halogen lights use a tungsten filament and produce a bright white light. The most popular option for security lighting, halogen flood lights are available in a range of designs, and can be used to light large areas – such as carparks and other outdoor areas.

Fluorescent Exterior Security Lights

Invented in 1890, fluorescent lighting has come a long a way and is today used around the world – most often in office strip lighting. Fluorescent light bulbs typically last eight to 10 times longer, and use about 75 percent less energy, than traditional incandescent light bulbs. However, fluorescent light bulbs will buzz when turned on, and so may not be appropriate if your business is in a residential area.

HID Exterior Security Lighting

HID lighting, or High Intensity Discharge lighting, is perhaps the most effective exterior lighting solution. A type of electrical gas-discharge lamp, HID exterior security lights can make more visible light per unit of power than fluorescent and incandescent lamps. HID lights cover large areas, making them ideal for lighting large external areas.
