Last year, British consumers spent an estimated £775 million on Easter-related products. The Easter holidays brings thousands of people to the shops in search of food, beverages, chocolates, greetings cards, decorations and flowers. All in preparation for the much-anticipated bank holiday weekend.

If you run a retail business, it is almost certain that you will feel the pressure and the demand of an increased number of customers visiting your premises. Therefore, it is essential that you have a proper security plan in place – keeping your staff, stock and premises safe.

Security Guard Presence

Having a security guard presence at your premises will deter thieves from stealing any of your stock. They will also give your customers and staff a sense of security that, if anything was to happen, trained guards are in place. Our security guards at Churchill Security are highly trained in a range of situations and can provide your premises with the best possible protection.

Know your Employees

In 2017 there were 21,299 incidents of staff theft, with the total cost of internal theft to UK businesses being £61 million. It is important that you know your staff, so we recommended doing background checks on all potential employees as part of the hiring process and carrying out regular monitoring of stock levels to deter staff from stealing.

Install CCTV

Install CCTV at the front of your premises, this way you will have images of everybody who leaves and enters the building. It is worth identifying the most important areas of your retail premises and having cameras placed at the correct angles towards these areas. CCTV cameras will act as a deterrent to thieves and help when you are trying to uncover a specific incident.

Carry Out Regular Checks

Experienced criminals will understand that they need to know the different and more sophisticated ways your premises might be protected. You should carry out a security check once a year to ensure your security measures remain up to scratch – ensuring that you are one step ahead of any potential threats from criminals.

Bag Check Policy

If your premises have changing rooms, don’t allow customers to bring their own bags into that area. A common tactic used by thieves is to hide merchandise in their bags when they are in the changing rooms. This way, staff will be unable to properly spot when an item is being stolen. Having a bag check policy in place means that you will minimize this risk.

Educate your Employees

Educate your employees on potential dangers, making sure that they know what to look out for. As your employees will be walking around the shop, conversing with customers, they should know what signs to watch for and how to act. Training your employees is crucial when tightening your premise’s security measures.

Controlled Access

Always keep track of people coming in and out of the building. If you have private staff only areas, they should be protected with a card or coded pass. Having private areas that are unlocked and open to intruders will cause many problems. Always keep track of the people entering private areas as there may be money, extra stock or other valuables in these areas.
